About Us
Nawal Foundation came into existence in the year 2014. It was duly registered under the societies registration act. The thrust areas on which the organisation works are on legal and health related issues of women and children. We work on two most important yet most neglected issues related to women; legal and health issues. Women as long as they remain in their homes are abused on account of dowry and face various form of domestic violence. When they move out of their homes to earn a living, then they are exploited and abused by their employers. The very concept of patriarchal society has overshadowed the right to a dignified life of a woman. What is most heart wrenching, is the fact that women themselves do not know the laws made for their empowerment. They fail to even realise that mere knowledge of laws and rights can sometimes save them and the future generations. Apart from legal awareness, we also work on issues related to their health, particularly menstrual. The huge school drop-out rate, unhygienic practices during menstruation, failure to use sanitary napkins has led to dire consequences, most importantly denying the fundamental right to education. Adolescent girls quit their school on the onset of periods and it was the only solution as per their families. More importantly, since periods are a taboo in the Indian society, the girls were discouraged to discuss about it. Hence we felt it was important to educate the adolescent girls as well as their mother, because when we educate a woman we educate generations.
